Does anyone else come across EICs which have double or reinforced insulation as a protective measure ticked on the schedule of inspections?

This springs to mind as I am currently looking at three different EICs for three seperate installations by three different companies, all have whom have ticked this box. Is it just me, because it seems like every single EIC I ever see has this box ticked?!

I have yet to design and/or install an electrical installation that utilises double or reinforced insulation as its sole protective measure???

Just wondering?

"Double insulation is not suitable as the sole protective measure in domestic situations as it would require require the installation to be under effective supervision (Reg 412.1.3)

However, this box would be ticked if double insulated equipment was connected or installed, as would Selv if Selv downlights were installed etc"
That's been my understanding of it, but if I've been wrong, always ready to learn

This is my understanding too. Could be just one item of double insulated equipment or a circuit consisting entirely of double ins. equipment. Either way it gets a tick.

PS Just checked the Eland website, they refer to their tails as double insulated.

That's for the benefit of those not aware that the sheath is a protective covering, not insulation as such, even if it is made of the same material as the insulation. (eg PVC/PVC ....XLPE/PVC)

If you look a bit further, on the Eland data sheet, it specifically calls the outer layer ''Sheath''

is there an echo in here lol
the above is my under standing of the general tick boxes.

Humm me personally would class general meter tails the same as T+E as insulated with an outer sheath.

Ha! no echo! on reflection, writing "as above" would have sufficed! On the meter tail issue, is it understandable that if a manufacturer says that their product is to a certain standard, then people using that product will believe them?

Hey Jeremy, I suppose I could sue you for slander, defamation of character, or get ya under copy-write law or perhaps plagiarism… but what the hell Im far too rich to bother:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Would the cable not have to display the two square logo if it was classed as "double insulated" ?

I agree that the box should only be ticked if it forms the protective measure for the whole or part of an installation, and should in 99% of cases not be ticked.

Cables are not double insulated either. I wish manufacturers would stop encouraging incorrect terms. They are insulated and sheathed.

So when you install say a double insulated light fitting the protective measure is not met?

SCHEDULE OF INSPECTIONS

Methods of protection against electric shock

Both basic *and* fault protection :

(i) SELV
(ii) PELV
(iii) Double Insulation
(iv) Reinforced Insulation

hmm , so i guess anyone ticking box 3 cos they've fitted a placcy light in the bathroom isnt using mcb's & rcd's at source then ?

how brave ! :-)

Well you live and learn… just done a bit of research and I think the consensus is that N/A would normally be filled in for the boxes in question, even if class 2 fittings and or selv on final circuits… ADS rules…

Double insulation Chapter 41 410.3.3
I never said anything about the circuit supplying the light fitting, but a double insulated light fitting showing the double squared logo will offer both basic and fault protection! and is part of the circuit. 412.2.1 - 412.2.1.1
So on the sheet i would put a tick.
