EICR and subsequent remedial work

Surely you'd be better biting the bullet and joining a scheme? It would cover those costs in what, 4-5 jobs?

Yeah but ive only been self employed for 12 months and for the majority of that ive worked as a subbie. Most of my work is small domestic at the minute and the vast majority of that hasnt been notifiable. Joining a scheme will be somthing i’ll be looking into very soon.

I dont incurr the cost though. I have to include it into my price and am 100% upfront about this with my customers. Of course the more work i do it would be better to be involved with a scheme.

Don’t join one, and still carry out the work. Look and see if you can find a prosecution for failure to comply with Part P. Then look and see how many you can find who have falsely claimed to be a member of a scam and been prosecuted for it.

I work across 5 or 6 labc's - so scheme membership is the way to go..... And around me lots of people are aware of the dreaded part p .....

There's a problem here I think. Part P is statuary, and if you fail to comply you commit a criminal offences (i.e. heard at a magistrates court), not withstanding the lack of prosecutions. Then there's the insurance liability if things go Pete Tong, i.e. your insurance company not paying out.

Is that what you are suggesting?

For £288 a year you have peace of mind and little chance of something biting you in the A. Several of the more recent jobs I've done would more than cover that fee on their own. Also, my Father taught me something I've carried all my life after saying to him one day "It's never happened yet."

Insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay out, its in their nature. You'll probably okay, sound electrician, but if it did gone wrong for you, you'll find out how unforgiving they can be.

Then there's the bit of failing to comply with Building Regulations, unlimited fine etc. If that's the way you wish to conduct your business, for the sake of a few hundred pounds however galling it may be, that's down to you. But you should not be suggesting to others to do so.

Well if we parallel ourselves, me in a scam, you failing to comply with the building regs, doesn't matter which is the more competent electrician, you're the one breaking the law & liable to prosecution. Its the way it is.

Why is it a recipe for disaster?
If the existing circuits are adequate then why waste materials installing new circuits?

Personally if the customer is having a new kitchen and there's only one RFC in the property I'll always explain the benefits of a dedicated power circuit to serve the kitchen as that's where the majority of the loading is typically. But equally if their budget doesn't accommodate this I'll alter the existing circuit accordingly as long as it's still safe and compliant.

So today i went back to the property to carry out the EICR here are a few pics. Seems like the previous tennant was a bit of an expert DIY’er

Some of the pictures may be difficult to make out, all but one upstairs light which were class 1 fittings did not have a cpc. A 2 core flex had been taken to each from, a block of connectors where there was actually a cpc present! In another of the pics the cpc is actually used as a strapper difficult to make out and i didnt notice it at first. I just thought the cpc had been cut out of the cable until i realised theyve slid a bit of red sleeving over it.

rn - rn reading was also high and i had an open circuit r2 - r2. This is the only ring final circuit in the house and from which i was proposing to install additional sockets as part of the kitchen refurb. However, and as quite rightly mentioned by others i suggested the installation of a new ring final circuit. Which having seen the state of the wiring the customer is happy to go ahead with.
