Hi.
I have just removed an old extractor fan and am wanting to install a new one.
the old one has left me with four wires coming out of the wall - (1xblack / 2x red / 1 x yellow and green) the new fan only has an option to connect two wires...
Help! (please) - many thanks
Kevin

were the 2 reds commoned together in the old fan?

the black will be the neutral and connects to N the 2 reds are switch live SL and permernant live L and the green and yellow is the earth the switched and perm live you will have to identify as switched live will switch the fan and possibly the light and the permernat live will be for the overun / timer so it stays on after the light is switched off , if any doubt call a spark as it will be a 10 min job for him ,having said that its always the small jobs that takes the time

thanks for the extensive reply.... does this mean i wire up the two reds with the black and put them in one connector together and put the yellow and green in the other?

Get a sparks in, It'll be a call out charge at most if no complications, make sure they are registered with a Part P affiliated organisation NIC EIC, ECA/Elecsa, Napit etc cheers

having read this, you must get a spark in. you have just suggested putting a dead short across live and neutral!!!!!

it sounds to me that you have the incorrect fan if you only have 2 terminals you shoul have 3 the green and yellow may not be used depending on the fan if its class 1 or 2 , the black goes to the N the 1 red should go to the switched live and the other red will go to the permernant live for the over run

It does sound as though you may well be out of your depth on this could be a good idea to call in a spark who is Paret P regesterd as pennywise has said its a call out fee , and if you make a mistake it could cost more

me too, just a call-out fee. never more than £500.LOL.
