Came across a white backbox with plastic clipped out to let the 2.5 twin and earth enter from above. The small gap was not filled ( I usually fill it with silicone) . Dawned on me that I’ve never seen A recommendation on what silicone type to use or is there a better way?

uf it's a surface pattress, i usually fill rhe hole if it's oversized for the cable/s. IP4X and all that . decorators'caulk is cheaper than silicone and does the job OK.
