Hi All,

Just a general price query because i have been known to be fair bit out on pricing this is what ive got and priced

1 x New 17th edition mains board
3 x Chrome double sockets to wire + chase in front room on a new circuit (Same ring as below to new board)
2 x Chrome double sockets to wire + chase in dining room on a new circuit (Same ring as above to new board)
1 x Straight swap switch to dimmer

Full house test certificate

Plaster all chasing out, put all carpet and cupboards back

£550

What would you suggest, i mean i'm pretty bad at pricing little bitty jobs like this re-wires etc im not too bad because i have a price per point excel spread sheet i write everything into

I thought 2 days, i thought 1 day for all works, and 1 day for test

I see as a day to change board test whole house, 1 day to to chase and wire sockets, then a day for all making good for one person. Or get a joey in to chase while you change the board then knock it out in 2 and earn a couple quid off his head

Average size Db changed in under 2 hours leaves 6 hours of a standard working day ragling 2 hours wired and making ways hours leaves min 2 hours connect and full test ,


oh light switch change 45 seconds


ps it's 5 sockets

When doing a CU change you must also do a check of the property before hand, asking the client of any alterations/additions - seeing if there are any broken fixtures and fittings. Followed by checking main earthing is up to scratch and bonding is present where appropriate (if it's not up to current standards, it needs to be upgraded) And an IR test is a must between N-E.

So, its not just a matter of slapping a new CU on.

P.S. An Electrical Installation Cert takes the best part of a day on it's own.

This makes me laugh eic takes best part of a day are you for real were do you get this from

I'd do the job for around 600, and worst case 2days work, but I'd be aiming for a days work. And as for a EIC taking a full day, how long would it take you to do an EICR then?

And Glasgow spark, it ain't just youngens that can get some speed up, been doing it for 27 years and I can get jobs done quicker now than when first out of my time, it seems more a case of practice. Some sparks I work with are dead slow with testing, they can take double the time I would take, doing the same tests, it comes down to an efficient way of working and being methodical.

I never said a full day, i said the best part of a day.

Obviouslly depends on the size of the install, but quoting 2hours for EIC is optimistic.

Yes methods like a global IR can be done to save time, however, i tend not to bother because 7/10 you'll get a duff reading and have to do everything individually anyway.

Jesus christ i didn't ever say 1 day for eic...i said the best part of a day, which to me is about 5hours if doing a 9hour day which i do tend to do now.

I'm not one to chain out an EIC so i can move onto the next one as quick as possible, wheres the need in rushing, take pride in your work. 2Hours for a proper eic with cert completed too me means going gung-ho - which is when corners can be cut. Not for me thanks.

I reckon £845 plus vat myself, to add that would not allow plastering work either

I test every property to the same standard , and like to refresh my testing skills I.e 2391 -2395 etc

Okay so Lets suggest a 4 bed detached house with 12 working circuits, a dog running around looking for attention, the property has 3 bedrooms full of games and junk due to children's bedrooms etc, the 4th has an en suite with down lighters and a electric shower, the kitchen has 20 down lighters and there are 50 sockets in the premises, there is also a shed and garage and a utility room with a ring and due to the appliances positions the points hard to find. spur units and under cabinet lighting, external sockets and security lights, IMO by the time you arrive, grab a coffee then chat to the customer about what you intend to do, then go around all the rooms unplugging everything that's at least an hour gone, you then go around inspecting switches and sockets plus bonding etc, another hour or more, so before you even remove the DB cover 2+ hours have passed, then you start testing with instruments on the 12 circuits, then test RCD's whilst filling in forms and start to write out your report, lets be conservative and say a mere 20 minutes a circuit, that adds another 4 hours, so were at 6 hours already, don't forget a break for a sandwich and then a chat with the customer about findings, surely to make money a full days wages has to be booked to the Job, so cut the Crap and stop acting like a complete Novice, we both know your trying to wind everyone up yet again.

First of all , 2 hours before removing cover is so un realistic , rcd tests take minutes so that's hardly an issue , I also get customer to unplug everything for me arriving as they know we're everything is ,
20 down lights in a kitchen ..... Ok you have described an extreme situation in this case I would price accordingly , I'm no novice I just don't conduct my jobs like you , you sound as if you "make" it last a full day for what ever reason (money)
my earlier statement of testing every property the same way same standard still stands

Never trust the customer to unplug everything, you need to check that yourself Glasgy, or you could meggar something electronic and it could cost you a lot of money to replace, also I do not make anything last, I like to give the customer a decent professional report which is accurate and not made up by guess work and cutting corners, this is what DIYers do and it needs to stop.

First of all , 2 hours before removing cover is so un realistic

It really ought to be emphasised much more,the "inspection" part of Test and inspection I mean

The service must never become a numbers crunching excersise
The inspection should be "a" or even "the" major part of the overall service

We really could take that 2 hours or so before taking the cover off,it enables us to get to know each installation

Any fool can bash their way through an inspection,missing things out on the way most likely.
if the installation is a tidy one to start the time taken to inspect it goes down.
if its a pile of cack then the time taken to inspect it goes up.
call it DCF's rule of inspection.
i was at one today....5 hours.
no point in rushing these things as pointed out before.
It pays to be thorough on these jobs i find
i was at fault where a tenant got abelt of a switch.
turns out the boxes weren't earthed and wired up on a dodgy homer.
2 previous inspections from the same outfit somehow failed to spot 9x switches not being earthed and passed it!
what if that tenant got killed?
who is the first port of call?
aye no point in being the fastest tester in c hall is there

all im saying is i dont take a full day to do a EICR or a EIC :S
unless in extreme situation the time would go up then so would the price
testing a already operating premises (domestic house 6-8 circuits) global IR , zs every circuit etc etc , plus i normally take all readings and type up at home now get more done in a working day that way
