Hi all

probabily a common topic but iv been out to quote a job and it involves 10 downlighters in an artex ceiling which is going to have a plastic ceiling below. I understand artex has asbestos in so what am I supposed to do? Get someone in to test it or? The house is probably 30 years old possibly slightly younger. Worried the hell out of me.

Cheers guys

As already said, a dust cover for the hole saw, a P3 mask and a dust sheet. My only addition would be to make sure that you use a sharp holesaw, not one of the cheapo ones you get in the wholesalers, a proper one from Bosch! Secondly, with a sharp holesaw you can then drill slowly with light pressure, the dust will then fall gently collecting neatly in your cover instead of spraying out the side of it.

This is the real world, if you had to get the biohazard team in every time you made a hole in an artexed ceiling you'd never get any work done. Also, it is a bit of a grey area, but the law allows for 'light' drilling in asbestos covered walls and ceilings so long as it isn't blue or brown asbestos, I guess the words 'light drilling' could be open to interpretation. And anyway, artex has very little real asbestos in it and it is of the sort that does very little damage. It aint nuffin like that pipe lagging I like to bash about with! :D

At last .... the still, small voice of calm, common sense and reason!!

Thank you Herr Rommel.

Artex was manufactured with white asbestos until the mid 80's so it depends when the artex was done if it's got any asbestos in it.

I'd go with D Skelton's plan to drill the holes and then seal the hole edges with some emulsion paint

If your going to drill it a dust collector and emulsion wont make any difference to the release of asbestos fibres mate!
Artex is very low risk but if your unsure get it tested, it doesnt cost the earth.

Most people wouldnt think twice about drilling it but just cover your own back especially with the talks of compo claims etc!

I was once told by a H&S guy to put wallpaper paste on the drill bit and on the wall where drilling as it stops dust becoming airborne. However, I'm not allowed to damage the asbestos so haven't been able to 'test' his idea. :banghead:

Don't touch the Artex unless it has been tested & proven as inert, remember that releasing asbestos fibres into the environment is a criminal offence.
Either get it tested by the client, removed, or get a specialist in to cut the holes & make good.

One of the worst things you can do is use a "Henry" as the fibres will pass straight through the bag & filter and be dispersed in the environment.

Remember, this is criminal law you are dealing with and people can make a fortune out of it, and your business insurance will not cover any claims.

If you are self employed, then you will be personally liable, and it an be taken all the way to your house & prison, by the "plaintiff" to coin a US term & the HM's HSE to use a UK term.

Don't mess with asbestos, it is not worth your while.

As it DOES kill, not today, not tomorrow, and not necessarily the person who gets covered in the fibres.

How would you feel after doing this work, then going home to your kids who come running to you at the door for a cuddle, and you pick them up with your work clothes on, and then 15 years later they have asbestosis?

This **** is not a joke.

DON'T touch it FFS!
