Hi all,

this is my first post on here. I have searched the web but cant find a straight forwards answer (or an answer at all) for this question which is part of my c&g course.

- how is pvc insulation protected against high temperature in batten holder type fittings?

and also

- why do the neutral and CPC conductors need to be terminated in the corresponding numbered terminals on the line conductor? (i imagine it will go bang otherwise!)

hope someone can help!!??

Having just re-read the second part... are you talking about in the consumer unit? Where the neutral and CPC should be terminated against the same circuit/MCB number on the corresponding earth and neutral bar?

1) using suitably rated batten fittings to protect against that temperature expected
2) if RCD protected circuit, resetting would not be possible (plus a whole host of other issues if it not RCD protected)

Anyway we terminate the line/N/E in numbered terminations so we can easily visually identify which N belongs to which L and E thus being able to identify (especially!) singles coming in and ring circuit ends for end to end test etc.

Contained within the batten fixture, yes as it was manufactured to do so. Suitable fittings and accessories is the main point here.

Most good quality modern battens, assuming you mean batten holder and not pendant holder like you get at a ceiling rose come with the removable lamp holder pre wired to the terminal base, these conductors will be suitably rated and your pvc insulated conductors which you wire to the base need no further protection.

In any event if you are asked in an exam "...how do you protect insulation on a cable in a light fitting..." and answered get a heatproof light fitting I dont think that would get a mark. But ....you never know with C&G wording.
