Hi Guys/Gals

I'm looking at changing over to the NIC from Napit, can someone tell me if I go approved contractor does that include Part P stuff or do I have to do both and how much does it cost.....

More money to be forked out, niceic approved is domestic/commercial and then you have to pay again for approved domestic installer scheme.

I spoke to them (NICEIC) the other day about this very thing. You don't 'pay twice', you pay for the AC scheme and if you do domestic work as well then they add the DI scheme as an extension for free. But you do have to specifically ask them to do it.

i am currently upgrading from dI to Approved contractor, its amazing how things get so blown out of proportion, it put me off applying for A/C for ages because of some of the rubbish ive read from peoples posts on general forums, i had my pre-assessment a few weeks ago and i asked him to explain the whole system and exactly what they require, as it doesnt do this very well on their application pack.

its quite simple you get a sheet to fill in when you apply for A/C and you tick which types of work you undertake/intend on undertaking e.g. dom/com/ind fire alarms emg lighting etc. if you tick the domestic box you will get the part P notification within your scope at no extra cost, you DONT need to show loads of different types of job areas, like 2 commercial 2 industrial 2 domestic etc as some people think, allthough if you can all the better, you will need about 5 jobs or 3 if you transfer over from DI, but as long as you can show the assessor you have a thorough understanding of bs7671, installation, testing and certification and above all safe working practices.

You can show him all domestic jobs if you like, and would be expected to show a few PIR certs too, if you do this however he will quiz you on different areas/methods of installation, as he will want to ensure you have had adequate experience within the areas you tick.
As for the fees, you pay a one off assessment fee of around £550 this includes the pre-assessment when he will go over all your paper work and tell you if he thinks your ready or not, then agree a date for the full day assessment.
then if you pass this you then pay your first year registration which is about the same as the Part P dI every april, if you pass halfway through the year they have a sliding scale of fees for the first year only.
so the way i saw it was if your paying for your Part P scheme every year any way and you are not just doing domestic work then you may as well just apply for A/C ,ok it is another £550 but i have lost a few jobs inthe last year beacause i wasnt an approved contractor which i could easiliy have made that money back on
I say go for A/C, i have my assessment within the next month so ill let you know how it goes! (must admit i am nervous as hell though)

£1100 to be approved by the NIC!?!?!?! I only payed £390 to be approved by Elecsa. Makes no sense to me whatsoever why people would want to pay by far the worst of the 6 current scam schemes over a grand, for what? Nothing I tell you, nothing but a small book with a big fat grinning Tony Cable on the cover and an assessor that'll fail you for not installing fly leads on KO boxes! Give over!

I think you miss Understood my post, but i take your point which is a fair one, (except the fly lead bit) but it depends on your intentions really, if you are happy doing house bashing then you make perfect sense! but if you have bigger plans than that for your business then an elecsa domestic approval wont count for squat!,
More and more often Companies/councils/insurance etc are specifying ECA/NIC approved only, and it is an area i have been offered a fair bit of work in so thats why i am upgrading, not just to do domestic work, for me personally self certifying just isnt an option any more.
The OP was talking about going from NAPIT to the NIC approved contractor scheme, elecsa is just a basic domestic scheme for PART P notification, this wouldnt really suit his needs would it?

Can't see why not. Personally, I wouldn't waste my energy thinking about an approved contractor scheme as not being approved by the NIC hasn't stopped me so far and I regularly work in the commercial sector. What I have come up against a couple of times however is not being CHAS accredited, and this is what I'm aiming towards next. I can see that ECA membership has it's benifits so may consider that in the future at some point.

To be honest, I'm not really interested in commercial. My future is aimed towards home automation so I really can't see NIC's non approval of my business being a problem there either.

And regarding the fly lead, trust me, I have seen many NIC so called 'experts' preaching about how dangerous it is not to install it. Typical mythical rubbish as always.

well then its seems we agree to differ, everyone has his own needs and unfortuanatly mine requires an ECA or A/C approval, if i didnt need it beleive me i wouldnt have it, but with the scope of work i undertake it is in my interests to have it, one thing is certain though, for you and me and everyone else, proving your competent is only going to get more and more required and more and more expensive!
