Not your average outdoor lighting job

Hi guys,

Posting this in here as it is potentially a job I have but don't want every Tom Dick and Harry seeing it and suggesting 50W GU10s to light it!! I need to find some flood lights to light up a lake, similar to this:




The lighting in the pictures was only temporary, running off a genny for a couple of weeks, however they want a permanent solution. Any ideas where to source floodlights similar to those used in stage lighting, however they obviously need to be IP rated or equivalent

A total of 8 lights would be required, I cannot work out the best way to recreate that light permanently!

I'd suggest LEDs rather than GU10s.

I don't know, they were a lighting company who did the stuff with the marquee in the picture. Probably worth a call to them. For something that will be there for quite a while, they need to be up to the job! Especially with all the Canada Geese around, they better be rated for goose muck!

Some of the wholesalers offer a lighting design service for free,so if your struggling to find what you need,let them do the legwork,show them what you need and these pics.must be someone on here who has done similar on here recently who can suggest some nice fittings.

Thanks Rob, that's a good idea. I know CEF do one at my branch. I am thinking of 8 x 400W metal halide lamps mounted on concrete pads, switched from inside the house. THey also want the wall lighting up, was thinking of 150W slim floodlight fittings. Quite a big cable will be required!

you would be quite surprised if you give citys the job of sourcing the fittings what they might come up with,even if they come up with the same as you its no harm,besides you can try and squeeze them on price and say you can get fittings cheaper elsewhere,more profit for you.

Very true. The length of the run will cause some problems, as it is easily around 150-200 metres. They have three phase in the house, so could try and use that to decrease voltage drop. Could you use a phase for each set of 4 x 400W lights, and the third phase for the smaller 150W floodlights?

Increase the csa of the run to get over the distance; On Highways work where long runs can may run to 1km or more the supply would start in10-25mm then go up to anything up to 120mm for the run then back down to 10-25mm for final termination.

I don’t think CEF are going to be of help in this case. In all honesty you need a specialist in event lighting. Get this wrong and I can see you going for swimming lessons with concrete boots in that lake. (OK a bit drastic. Bankrupt).

Top tip here. Vaseline. Cover all of the rubber seals with the stuff and cover all screws too. This will stop the screws corroding and also stop the fittings leaking.

I along with a few others resided the lighting for trafalgar square fountains. It looks awesome, but the fittings cost a small fortune. I think that the firm I worked for used a lighting design service.

Have you looked at MH architectural projector spots or sports stadium lighting? Stage lighting tends to be TH, great for dimming control and optics but not good on lamp life or power/lumens and are not intended for outdoor use. Standard floods are not good at long distance throw, the beam angle is too wide.
