My Dad has a house with Panels that he only uses half of the year. He was thinking that he could heat the house while he was not there for free using a storage Heater - has anybody done this are there any catches? - I suspect most Storage heaters have only mechanical bi-metal switches. Thanks Duncan

Would his storage heaters allow been fed with electric between the hours of say 6am to 6pm ( ie, when the Solar is active ) and be allowed to output at the sametime ??

He doesn't have installed yet and he is going to buy some - so the answer is Yes to any combination really

I heat a couple of towel rails with excess power, which works really well. Your storage heater solution sounds like a great idea, but bear in mind in winter when you need most heat, you may find there isn't enough excess energy available to give sufficient heat. You will likely still need some other form of heating to compensate for those times.

are you talking about using them essentiall for frost protection?

If so, I'd use an immersun, but also fit an inline room thermostat set to maybe 8 degrees to avoid just throwing expensively subsidised renewable energy out into the air as heat for no good reason - the stat can be turned up any time someone is actually using the place, and there is a boost function to allow it to pump electricity in on arrival to heat the place.

Gavin thanks for the advice - that is exactly what he wants to do have frost protection while he is not there. But have secondary heating he can use in the evening when he is there.
