I had a customer ring me a moment ago, I fitted a double socket directly into consumer unit in the meter cupboard, joined into the same breaker as the downstairs ring.
she says one side of the socket works, but the other side has stopped! it has no power! given its fed by just one cable as a spur it seems a bit odd, the ring its fed from is working fine and no faulty sockets. the cable to socket is clipped direct and is around 40 cm long and unlikely to be an issue as one side still works.
I cant go and check until next week, but given its a Hager double socket I fitted, i am surprised for one to fail, especially so soon. Maybe I am too confident in Hager products?
Anybody got any ideas on causes other than simple failure of device? given the left side outlet works but its only the right side that's stopped?
Surely if there were loose wires etc it would impact both sides of the same socket as its all linked in the back?

well I cant take it back to supplier as such as it was in my van stock of lucky dip Hager items I have had for a while, I will though buy a new one and then take it back. Figure the supplier makes enough out of me as it is.

Gavin, just change the offending socket, is it realy worth contesting this issue?:D
Oh dont worry @Pete999 I will change it anyway no problem there as I got a van full, but I fully intend to buy a new socket afterwards to replenish the stock in van wait a week then take the dud one in for a refund on a subsequent visit! It all came from Denmans at one stage or another anyway over the last couple of years, Just cant be sure when....
Just unusual to have a Hager product fail and so quick!

Oh right

I was expecting you to say it was a BG dsso at first Gavin! I usually fit Hager as standard, and have never had any problems to my knowledge in many years now..

Just double check the customer has both switches turned on. May even be worth calling ahead if it could save you a journey.
You could ask them to try turning each switch off then on to save embarrassment.

I have full confidence the customer has tried this as she has plugged things in and tried, only one side works. she is also quite intelligent and far from daft and a post grad phd research student in languages but has very poor dexterity in her hands due to some medical condition so needs me to fit the socket as her husband is not what you would call diy savyy.

Post Grad and PHD don't always equate to common sense Gavin.

@Des 56 you cynical person... her husband has also plugged stuff in and tried switches... so for them to both be a bit dim would be surprising....
Oh I'm not sure about that!
Quoted to add sockets for a Doctor and Dentist husband & wife and they where quite shocked that walls would need chopped out, floors lifted etc to run wires to the sockets, thought it was merely a case of putting them on the wall and that's it:tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

This bad spelling thing I really don't give one if I spell it wrong or get the grammar incorrect I am sure that you get the points that I am making, you must have better things to do than mark my work
So sorry, I had no idea I did that.
I've changed it to a Like now. I can only blame the red. Sorry Anthony :(

Been there as well 123 during my Apprenticeship in the late 1950s the company I worked for wired some old peoples dwellings, always had gas lighting, and electric was magic, one old lady cales us back (she was a retired head teacher) her bulbs (lamps|) had black smudges on them, thought she had to light them with a match, bless.

Yeah I've had similar too that. It reminds me of the story of when vacuum cleaners were first around and someone not needing to empty the bag on it because they thought the dirt went up the power cable and into the wall!
