I would assume it should operate the same way on 1P + N as 3P + N

I'm not very well up on them but can't see why not
Mike, Thanks. I left out 2 phases and use only one. dont know if it will have some back feed effect on the system.
 
Forgive my curiosity, but is it staying single insulated with the contacts exposed?
Ah, it isn't in UK...we wouldn't be allowed to do that here!
 
Are you sure that's a surge suppressor?

It looks more intelligent than that; more like a supply conditioner with surge, voltage stability etc.

Since it is a known make and model - which I can't make out, you should contact the manufacturer and download their manual and or ask them directly.
