Seen a chippy onsite today with a ac to dc converter or his saw, basically it looked like a battery but had a 110v lead plugged into his "cordless saw" so it was mains powered.

Where can I get hold of these for a Makita 18v? Only ever seen these today, what a great idea.

No idea mate. I've never seen a power supply like you describe, but sounds an interesting idea. Like all good ideas I wonder why it had not occurred to me before. It should be possible to build such power supply into an old battery pack , or a box and using an old battery connector as a plug to the tool. Your best bet is to ask the Chippy about his and where he got it from.
I think the idea as a commercial venture, would be fiercely resisted by the power tool manufacturers. The Dewalt/Ryobi battery converter suffered in a similar way, see the first link. The second link shows a crude attempt at converting a charger to provide the power and the bodging of a connector and leads.

I dont get it!!! .... i used drills with transformers and extensions for many yrs with my drills, efficient battery drills were a god send when they arrived and a good charge and use battery rotation is all that is needed to keep you going, although if you have a cheap drill and battery it wont be long before this routine becomes more frequent and you find yourself waiting, i always spend that extra penny for a decent drill with a LI-on technology. Had my bosch 3 yrs now and dont think i ever needed to wait for it even under heavy demand.
