Hi,
National grid seemed to have a big fault on the evening of 12/01/17 uk power networks were snowed under with reports of flickering lights across the south east and south London. Any news on the actual fault?

I had the candles lit ready for the black out, two lots of flickers thought the third one would be us having an early night, damn it! :-)

If you want to worry yourself to death about the grid's ability to meet power demand, then this site is the way to do it!
G. B. National Grid status - http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/index.php

Uk demand earlier today peaked at over 50GW which is more than we can generate ourselves.
This means we have to rely on buying imported energy from our "friends" in France, Ireland and other places.

Perhaps that poor poster saying his lights were flickering wasn't telling porkies after all :)

Right now (18:00 Friday) is a good time to watch all the demand and generation 'meters' maxing out. They're even using a bit of open cycle gas turbine, which is bloomin' expensive, so definitely up against it.

Yes, we are in the red zone tonight...must check the candle drawer!

surprised MDJ ain't been on and attributed this to Brexit. :(

That's everyone watching Trump getting inaugrementevie or something, I watched an the first episode of Frost myself. Mad world.

Locally the DNOs offices have all been fitted with blackout blinds as they are taking what they call 'blackstart' very seriously. The worry is that the public could be off supply and will be able to see dno premises powered up.
I recently wired a newbuild for a dno employee and was asked to feed a smallish outbuilding with a 10mm swa which I thought was a bit over the top, I now discover that he has acquired a generator (40ish amp) which he is keeping on standby for such an event, hence the 10mm.
