I have a ceiling fan with a light box controlled by 2 wall dimmer switches. I simply want to replace them with standard 2 way switches. Coming into the box there are 2 white wires and 1 black wire that are wired to the old switches with 1 white wire spliced to connect to both switches. Seems to be pretty simple remove the 2 wires from each switch and connect to the new switch. However when that was done and power restored the fan and light both came on with both switches in the off position. One switch when flipped causes no change and the other trips the breaker as soon as it it placed in the on position. I then removed both switches completely unwired them and capped the wires turned the power back on and both the light and fan came on.... I am not sure how they are getting power with the switches removed? The old dimmer switches were operating correctly but beginning to fail (sometimes you needed to press the button multiple times)

Any suggestions on what would cause this and how to replace the switches would be greatly appreciated.
