Can anyone tell me if you have to earth steel work in a domestic property if all circuits are RCD protected..
Cheers..

any and all EXPOSED metallic structural parts of the building. 411.3.1.2

for example i have known houses have a RSJ run through them which is above the ceiling and beneath the floor boards so it would not be classed as exposed so would not need bonding.

Sorry did mean to say non-exposed metal work. Which i thought u didnt have to, if you had full rcd protection. But a building officer told me you do?

News to me then mikeymoo, hold out for a few other guys to give there opinions.

regards.

idont think it requires it but if the BO said it should be, then it cant be that difficult....
save the hassle!!!

I fear this comes down to professional judgement. Depending on how the cables run in relation to the RSJ, then maybe, but generally, I'd say no. Do the cables pass through it in any way ?

Throw it back at him and ask him for the regulation that requires the non-exposed steel to be bonded.

Thats the problem nowadays.

A fair few councils have sent some BCO's on a course and they now think they know it all.

No need if not accesable, plus if he makes you do it you'll have make a nice access hatch in the middle of someones through lounge.:D:D

Its funny you should say that Jason. Because he told me he's use to work in the council cleansing department 6 months ago!
