hi guys a friend of mine wants me to check his hot tub connections that he's done himself, i haven't done any work with hot tubs before and would appreciate any advice.

this is what I intend to check:

1st i'm going to find out the total wattage of hot tub
then i'm going to check the mcb and cable sizes are suitable.
after that i'll test continuity, insulation, and rcd trip times
then i'll make sure there's local isolation outside.
then i'll check zs

i'll ask about installation instructions but doubt they have any because they've had it a while,

in the brb page 171 (zone 2 note) it says if the circuits part of a TNCS system then its recommended that an earth mat is installed, whats a earth mat??

also brb pg 170 second paragraph it says 'swimming pools within the scope of an equipment standard are outside the scope of these regulations ' does this mean that if the hot tub has a British standard the its ok just to follow the installation instructions?

cheers in advance

Remember that the circuit has to be capable of taking the heating current (usually plus one pump) continuously. This is because most tubs take anything up to 12 hours to get up to temperature from a cold fill (which will happen twice a year at least).

Tubs usually pull full load when in use - all pumps and jets on and heater will be going because the heat loss is greatest in use with cover off. Although this isn't usually continuous, I normally design to this load.

continuously is generally taken to mean over one hour
