I recently estimated for a job and before I reveal what it was, I was wondering what a couple of you guys would estimate for the job so that I can see if it was reasonable as I believe the customer may not think so.

I have been asked to replace thirteen low voltage downlights (just the downlights not the trasformers as well). The job is fairly straight forward as each transformer is accessible and each hole is already the perfect size so it is simply a case of remove old downlight, attach new one to tranny and then pop it in. The ceiling is of normal height and none of the downlights are in a difficult or hard to reach place. The downlights are costing me £10.80 each including bulbs, a total material cost to me of £140.40.

What would your total estimate be? Would you just add a labour charge or would you also apply a mark up to each downlight and if so, how much?

I believe that my estimate is very fair and reasonable but like I said, I would be interested to see what some of you guys think before I reveal all ;)

Regards,

Cos that 's what it is - take it or leave it, I dont feel I should justify my charges, a quotes a quote simples.

i would estimate half a day, so £100 on top of materials cost, with a mark-up on the materials of 20% so total £268

Fair enough. Just seems a little low to charge £60 to fit 13 downlights. Lets say you're charging £30ph, you are estimating that you'll be able to do 6/7 downlights per hour. If you're charging £40ph then that's about 8 per hour. That seems pretty quick.

Ok, my estimate was £330. I estimated for 4 hours work @ £150 but put a note that if it took less that four hours then I would charge less.
