lol, that is a very good point. But what about my estimate. Is it fair or a little too much on the pricey side? I thought that I should mention I live in a large city on the south coast.

£20-25 per light fitting inclusive of parts and labour, clients seem to understand this a bit more and dont try to haggle you because its all in,i have noticed mechanics lingo and when they say it this way people agree that the deal is good, which in this case it is anyway,so less likely to say no and get a cowboy to come and fit some crap for £100 all in.

can't see that you're far out there. i,d tell 'em .OK £300 for payment on the nail.

what about added costs etc Is there site parking etc boxes and connectors etc ?

If you get everything set up and ready to go it should be a very easy morning . £130 (london)

you say £140.00 for materials ? but i doubt you have factored in the connectors and boxes, cable ties etc .

The £150 is my estimated labour charge for four hours (half day) but it also inludes my costs such as fuel, parking, insurance, scam scheme fees, any bits and bobs I might use (connectors, screws, crimps), time to collect materials, writing up and printing estimate, writing up and printing invoice etc etc...

Cables are already stripped, 2 wago's one choc box & no holes to cut 8 per hour all day long!

I am at £290.00 all in.

Had similar recently, was told by the letting agent he would get back to me as seemed a little expensive............

Phone call a week later from odd job man...."Help they asked me to change the bulbs in the faulty downlighters and replace those that werent working.....none of the downstairs lights will work now."

Sorry but I did laugh!

It would seem to me that prices vary considerably depending on where in the country the job is. For example those of you who quote in the £200-£250 region are in places like yorkshire and northern ireland but us southerners tend to quote in the £250-£300 region. I'm also under the impression, I may be wrong however, that one or two of those who in my opinion are waaay too cheap are of the mindset that this is a quick little cash generator as opposed to a legit 'I'll let the taxman know' sorta job. I think maybe my estimate may be very slightly too steep and could maybe come down £10-£20 but I still stand by my justification of my labour charge and the sort of costs (insurance, fuel etc...) that are included in that, that some people might easily forget.

Thanks for all your replies and advice, some things I will definitly be taking on board :)

reasonable is sticking 20% mark up on the material and £28/hr if self employed to cover the cost of van, inurances etc. i.e £287.00. realisticly it's half a shift. And wear gloves!!!

Just done a similar job. Replace 5 Click Flame Guard ELV fitting with bulbs.

All in I charged them £115. The fitting c/w bulb cost £8.40 each inc the VAT.

Worked out about £12 per fitting and was there an hour plus a cup of coffee

considering that british gas would charge £96 /hour for labour and make the job last 5 hours., you're not too expensive.
