Hi All, Just a quick question, my decorator wants to put his washing machine in his bathroom as it is the only place they can put it where it can be plumbed in easily. It will sit under his boiler which is also in the bathroom and both will then have a cupboard built round them. He tells me that they are well away from the bath and that any electrical connections will be outside the bathroom. Is this ok or is it against regs??

I have had a look at my regs book, and as far as I can interpret that if it is inside a cupboard thus providing a partition and with the electrical connections being outside of the bathroom, I cant see a problem. Am I missing something?? just want to be sure.

I had a similar job some months back. The client wanted 2 sockets behind a partition for a washing machine and a tumble dryer. They said they thought that would be safe as there is no way to get to these sockets without removing the appliance first, and they were right. However, there is nothing to stop the next owner from using it to plug a hair dryer in, so I fitted both on a switched FCU.

The regs state greater than 3m from edge of zone 1 for sockets, but it doesn't go into 'cupboards in bathrooms', so i think you have to use some common sense. The socket you plan to install in the cabinet in the bathroom will at some point in the future get used for something other than this washing machine, albeit by the present owner or the next. I would put it on a switched FCU (or unswitched if you want).

it's a good idea. saves customer wearing his underpants and socks in the bath for a wash when he can then chuck them into the machine.

Where are the electrical connections for the boiler?
