Re: Tell us about your faults !

I`ve got a weird one that happened to me last year. It seems to defy reality.

I was working last year for a firm on a social housing project doing Periodics. It was an estate and all the properties were roughly the same. After doing the same thing day in day out for about 3 months, I tested a house which was a TN C S. The R1 + R2`s were all fine, the Ze was fine ( it was around 0.10) yet when I came to do the Zs they were all above 8 ohms (it was 16th edition board with MCB`s).

After being baffled and having a think, checked a few things out tightened all CPC`s in the board etc the readings stayed the same.

I spoke to the supervisor who was as baffled as me and he sent someone round for a second opinion ( I guess they thought I had got it wrong ) and the second opinion confirmed my readings. They decided to install a new CU to see if it was just something strange happening with the board itself.

Whilst that job was being done, a couple of days later I got the exact same problem in a property around the corner. WTF!

When the CU was changed on the first job, we got exactly the same readings again.Cue even more head scratching. I got offered a new job ( better pay ) and left that firm. On the day I was leaving they were talking about changing the two properties into TT systems to be able to get round the readings.

Anyone had/heard of anything like this before?

Re: Tell us about your faults !

Well this was a good one simple job extra socket in a kitchen board and bonding looked ok not up to currnet regs but complies with 16th edition so not to worried the customer wanted a socket for her fridge stud wall right behind the CDU , brill easy new circuit 16 amp RCBO job done all went well all installed R1 R2 ok insulation ok well if not id have had to ask a question cable was only 2 meter long , so what was the problem i here you ask , it was the Zs reading was infinity >2000 !!!! ugh i thought head scratcher so i thought a few Zs tests around the house all Were >2000 oh problem cover off board Ze test >2000 scrating head getting baulder by the minuit , neutral i though so i stuck the neutral on the earth terminal and tested again and got 0.32 so with earth and neutral of the tester connected to earth all ok so must be a neutral fault so why was it not showing up so i thought switch off every thing and disconnect the neutral at the main switch and see what happens switch on board with just a lighting circuit on , and yes it worked with no neitral connected after another two hours of testing i located a trapped neutral in a ceiling rose giving a neutral to earth fault sorted that out and yes you guessed it retested and no neutral on the supply , the whole house was running off a 1.5 neutral earth fault , Called out supplier dig up road and fault was in a joint under ground , reconnected neutral tested Ze and all down to 0.32 brill on a TNS that was cool but the dam hour job ended up all day , arghhh so when you get to a job never say this ones an easy one

Hello all,

Had a strange one the other day, extension on large sprawling 60`s style house had power failure. MCB staying on fine but no power other end. Found cable was running through massive wasps nest behind facia board and they had destroyed the cable! Cant believe didnt trip the MCB tho!

Re: Tell us about your faults !

I got called to an elderly couples bungalow a few years back.

They said that an electrician put a new split load board in took his CASH and left saying that all was fine and they did not bother checking it before paying him.

Well to cut a long story short, the old board was wylex re-wirable after an inspection I found that it was only one of the 2 rings with 1 being the kitchen, it turned out that about 5 years ago the old boy put a ironing board hanger in the utility room and had gone straight through the cable in the wall, I explained to him about the RCD and earth leakage and all he said was "well, I'll be damned"

So I hacked the plaster off repaired the damage and charged him with a cup of tea and some biscuits...

I got his daughters house rewire on the strength of that...:)
