I have just received my domestic installer qualification certificates in the post so next step is to look for some work experience. Can anyone provide help on the following questions?

  • Hourly rate – As a new apprentice what can I expect to get as an hourly rate? I live in Oxfordshire if that helps as I guess rates must vary around the UK. I basically want to make sure that someone does not take me for a ride just because I am inexperienced.
  • Payment – If I got part time work or was paid per job (rather than being fully employed) what would be the normal method to get paid? Do I need to invoice them, make myself a contractor, or register as my own company?
  • Insurance – If I become a part-time jobbing electrician working for a company would it be advisable to get my own insurance cover, rather than rely on the cover provided by the firm whilst undertaking the work?. If so, what cover would I need to get? can anyone recommend good insurance company’s to get a quote?.

Last but not least…. If anyone out there is looking for additional pairs of hands in the Reading, Oxford, Didcot, Wallingford area then please get in touch.

Cheers,

Simon.

Hi Simon,

Congratulations and good luck.

Not too sure myself but if your going to be self employed then I imagine you'd be better off taking out some form of insurance to cover yourself and your tools.

As for what insurance, not too sure again. Life? Cover for theft/damage?
Which insurance firms? Think you'll just have to do a bit of leg work and shop around. So many out there these days and others that'll specialise in this area.

Rates I think vary slightly. £8-10 ph is the going rate near me (Yorkshire) for labourer/mates.

Hourly rate – As a new apprentice what can I expect to get as an hourly rate?
Without experience, they can give you peanuts

Payment – If I got part time work or was paid per job
If you're just starting out, to be honest, without being harsh, how are you meant to be able to run your own jobs without experience, to do price work?

Insurance – If I become a part-time jobbing electrician working for a company would it be advisable to get my own insurance cover, rather than rely on the cover provided by the firm whilst undertaking the work
You will be covered under the company you work for.

Hi, thanks for the reply

Hi Scotty,

I think my wording was a bit mis-leading. What I meant was that initially I would always be working under the umbrella of a registered firm but if they only wanted me here and there (not full time employment) then what was a sensible way to get paid.

Thanks,

Hi Simon, on the subject of insurance, if you were working with a company or alone personal indemnity insurance can be a good idea. Without being too pessimistic, should someone get injured or worse as a result of your work (if its your fault or not) and in general will protect you years after the fact if you keep paying.
