Nice gift from a customer

I was fitting some downlights in a kitchen this week & spotted this in the garage, after the customer paid me he said "you can also take that avo home with you if you like it"

Will be very usefull in the future

a model 40 if i am not mistaken, circa 1950's or early 60's. if i remember correctly, this model had a fairly low input impedance and is great for eliminating induced or ghost voltages. check the battery compartment for corrosion and fit new batteries.

Yes there's a bit of corrosion, needs a bit of tlc

which model? some has a 15V battery (BLR121) and a 1.5V D cell. some used a 4.5V cycle lamp battery instead of the 15V.

here's a link to the 15V, usually rebuilt with button cells.

I started out with an AVO8. Possibly 50 years ago.
Big, heavy, cumbersome. But it's what we had.

hmm, don't remember seeing a battery comp. like that. a call to AVO Megger would be a good idea.

that's why we had apprentices..... " stick your fingers in that, see if it trips".

think you're right there. 2 4.5V side by side.with the 1.5V being a D cell.

pics. 15V battery is low . zeroes OK on ohms x 1. included case has broken fastener. avo 8 MKIV. last calibrated 1985. looking for £90. leads not included.

I recall 'Ol' timer' sparks doing just that, when the bulb in me Drummond tester broke. He put hid digit on each way in a DB, 'that's dead, that's dead, oooooohhh that's live, ouch that's live......'.

I have 2 of these things, one gets used sometimes for vintage radio repairs. The internal construction is very pretty.
