Hi, can anybody help, I've been to college for three years qualified as a level 3 but did not do the final inspection and testing, how far can I go as in doing work for myself? How do I certify my work?

Do you want to cert your own work in a domestic property.If that is the case then you will have to be Part P,or get the LABC in and they will charge you a small fortune

I recently contatcted the NICEIC to get some clarification on what an electrician needs to be able to self certify.

One person told me you need to do part p and be a registered member with them (or any one else), then put me through to recruitment and was told you just need to have you 17th edition (and be an competant person, so 2230 level 3)

I have been told by a few sparky mates also that you just need to have 17th. But this is only to sign off your own work.

There seems to be so much around saying you need this or that or not. Is part p not for kitchen fitters and the like?

Part P is a building regulation and not a qualification.

If you want to work in domestic properties, one of the routes is to enroll with one of the schemes, to comply with Part P.

To do this you need various insurances etc, and be qualified to the 17th edition.

no although as qualified as need be for most jobs, jib wont recognise you as fully qual without nvq3 and you would need 2330 l3 before you can get nvq3

yeah but if ya workin for ya self ya dont need all tht lot i was told by me college all i need is 2330 l2 to understand electrical princables , 2382 regs i didnt realy need 2392 testin but i did it anyway cant realy see the point in spendin another year in college for somethin i dont need lol

So really having done my level 2, level 3, 17th edition, and being a competent person, do I now comply to Part P of building regs, yes or no??? (With Part P not being a qualification)

If yes, with me working to Part P of building regs and working to 17th edition and being a competent person does that mean that I can test and certify my own work on a domestic installation, yes or no???

If yes, to test and certify my own work on a domestic installation do I need to register to a recognised company, i.e NICEIC, yes or no???

Sorry for writing these questions the way I have, but it is so hard to get the answers that I am looking for, thanks for all the replies but it looks like alot of people are in the dark about this topic

YOU do not comply with Part P, your work has to comply with Part P, so you EITHER

Join a scheme, which you will need some quals for, or inform the council direct for each job (which costs a lot) and let them deal with it.

So really going to college for three years and blowing best part of £1,500 gets you no futher than Joe Blogs down the road with no qualifications but can probably inform the council and rewire his house just because he's a competent person who knows the very basics.

Thats basically it in a nutshell.

But what you must remember is that the council will not sign off work that is sub standard or not strictly to 7671.

Therefore, people may THINK they know what they're doing, but in the long run could cost them a lot of money to put right.

Thats why you have to be a bit of a salesman as well nowadays.

Yes mate you do need to register with one of the scheme providers,because they will come out an assess you.

You do not comply to part p by being 'competent'. You MUST inform local building control or join a Part P scheme for every domestic job you do that falls under part p of building regulations.

You can test and certify your own work as long as you inform building control to get a part p certificate! it is much easier to join a trade association like niceic or elecsa.

You sound like you have all the relevent qualifications (2330 and 17th edition), so for every job you do just ring your local council and inform them that you are going to start a job, and ring them when you have finished the job and issued the certificates. They WILL CHARGE you for the priveledge so in the long run it is more cost efficient to join a scheme.

Then after this would I get intouch with a scheme provider for them to inspect both rewires after completing there registeration, then hopefully become a spark that can certify my own domestic work?

What you have to do mate is register with a scheme provider and they will come out and assess your work.A major job like a house rewire and then a minor job,say adding a socket

I registered with the NIC last year at the age of 19 for the company i worked for as the qualified supervisor as an approved contractor. the Nic rep told me that i was only required to be qualified to the 2330 lv3, as the nvq lv3 is no harder is still level 3 just further education. but now you will obviously be required to take the 2382-2 or -1 as appropriate. you cannot undertake work that falls under the scope of part p without being approved, or getting local building control to sign it off......which isnt cost affective! hope that helps

this is why i hate this Part P, its not been properly educated on people. people still think its some sort of qualification!!! its part of the building regulations!!! theres loads of building regulations A, B, C, D,E etc... its just another part of the 1's which already exist.

people need informing properly.

It's scandalous that people holding a JIB Grade Card/ECS Card are not allowed to self-certify their work, however.
