Do tails HAVE to be upgraded?

Hi all

Replacing a consumer unit and I always upgrade the tails from the meter to 25mm.

However, the run is an absolute nightmare for a flat im doing a the meter is in the communal hallway.

I'm assuming they have to be upgraded if changing consumer unit?

Not if the DNO head is 60a.....or if you consider the load at present to be within the capacity of the existing tails.

The onsite guide recomends you do however remember that is just a guide, If the tails are in good condition and are covered by the main service fuse then id leave them in place. IE 100a gets 25mm

I usually allways fit new tails however if as you say its a pig of a job then providing that are large enough and in good nick then they can stay

I agree with wirepuller and bigbaddave.

If it's unpracticable to replace the tails then don't do it - providing they're adequate for the load.

Just imagine the size of the OSG guide if it covered all eventualities!!

besides most cases would involve the electric company to come and disc/re- connect to the meter - wouldnt it

Are you sure there isnt a 60a switch fuse beside the cut out in the communal hallway?

I would expect to see either switch fuses or a Ryefield board with the relevant sized HRC fuses protecting the tails for each flat/apartment.

The answer is NO, it's like asking do you have to replace the consumer unit if you are replacing the tails, why are you assuming they have to be upgraded? and why do you always replace existing tails with 25mm?

nope , its aimed at any type of installation with a supply no more than 100A.
