i have a new light for my ceiling but my earth wire does not come down long enough to be able to attach to the actual light is this a problem or can i just use my live and neutral wires and leave the earth wire ?
would really appreciate some help please.
Thanks Hannah

Hannah,

What type of fitting is it? metal? plastic? Which room is it in? Is there 1 earth cable or 2 or more?

Use a connector block to extend earth cable. Get an electrician to do this for you. Or at least someone who feels confident!

as last post. extend earth with a terminal block. make sure you sleeve it green /yellow. if it's a metal fitting, the earth must be connected to the metalwork

Not strictly correct, there are plenty of class 2 metal fittings around. Is there an earthing terminal?

truckster, i stand corrected. just that 90% of metal fittings are class1, erring on the side of caution . as you say, if there's an earth terminal, it's class1.

extend the cable attach to fitting if not class II (square within a square symbol) and do a Zs test for good measure
