could any body tell me a good way to layout an invoice haven't done one for 15 years and do employer require your ni number if you invoice direct for labour and materials thanks to any one who can help

I have company details at the top right, customer details top left, below this i have invoice number and date.

Then i used a table in work with a column for description of work done and a column for total amounts then a grand total at the bottom.

As a footnote i have bank details and who to makes cheques out to. T and cs on the back.

Took the main idea from a standard office template

Yep me to I have a standard word template and I have then re-use the ones I have created for regular customers ie letting agents and I also number the invoices for file names ie LA1-001 LA2-001. Also dont print a thing everything by email and every couple of weeks I update my memory stick in case the "trusty" PC throws its hand in and if you think thats smug well too bad as I get sick in tired of authors reporting that they were on the last section of their book that they worked on for the last 2 years when someone nicked their laptop.

I have attached the 2 I use in PDF format send me your email and I will send you the word copy

Dont forget to include your UTR (unique tax reference) number if you are responsible for payment of your own tax

If you dont have on,e then in the construction industry your client can withhold the tax so he will need to give him your NI number
