I have just had a call from a company who are looking at installing some elctric gates at the bottom of a long drive.
They have asked me to price for 100m armoured cable (its a looooooong drive).

I asked the guy what amps i need to power the gates and he replyed 6a.(prolly less than this but thats what he said)
They want the cable clipped to the fence down the side of the drive.

I was just looking at what the voltage drop may be for this cable so turned to page 338 and 339 of the bgb.

Now i like to use 3 core armoured cable i was wondering which colomn i should use
p339 colomn 2 says 2 core dc, colomn 3 says 2 core single phase ac and colomn 4 says 3 or 4 core 3phase,
no colomn for 3 core single phase.

do i use cololmn 3 or 4?

Thanks in advance guys

treat it as 2 core a.c. single phase. the 3rd core is used as cpc, so will not count in the VD equation. top of my head, at 6A yo'll get 12V drop using 2.5mm

I would go with 4mm TBH. No doubt they may want automatic lighting connecting etc and as mentioned possibly a socket as it's always handy to have.

How are they controlling the gates?

as strima says, you may want some multicore control cables down there.long way to walk to open the gate for visitors..

The last set of gates I looked at were controlled by remote fobs and door entry type system wired (camera and all the gubbins) in Cat5, only a 25m run so not sure how Cat5 would hold up over 100m.
