hi im fairly new to all of this but have recently gained a qualification with eal, just need to be assessed by nic etc to be fully qualified. Im looking to install power into my dads shed as one of jobs to be assessed. The previous sparky who done the electrics in the extension, put an outside socket on the wall to allow power to go into the shed. what im looking to do is put a small consumer unit in the shed so as power tools and garden lights can be run. Is it possible to use the outside socket to put power to the consumer unit or is there another way? the main board is the other side of the house, so using this socket would be easiest.
Any help would be grateful thanks:)

If the outside socket is on the ring this is questionable, if a fault occurs the ring would go down with it.

I would use a dedicated circuit for shed power .

Hi,
How would you run the power from the socket to the shed, i.e. would you take of the socket and put the whole lot into connector blocks and adaptable box ?? See what I am getting at, it wont look neat if not done properly and also I dont think it was the previous sparky's intention to use it as an "extension" to power up the shed in the way your thinking.

Is there no way you can get power from inside the house as in an isolator, then swa into the sheds consumer unit and then come off that for your power, lights etc ??? As Martysparks said, its best to have independent supply.

I am just trying to give you a different option thats all and I hope this helps a little>

Best regards,
Sav

not sure how the circuit in the extension is done think it might be a seperate one taken back to the main board. the previous sparky knew what the plan was going to be and just said it was up to us to do what we needed to in the shed. im open to any suggestions on how to power it up but with minimal disruption as they have just redecorated the house

Outside socket was more likely for using appliances in the garden or temporary use of equipment in the shed. You are proposing a permanent setup so I would go with the others and use a dedicated circuit from the CU. I doubt your assessor would be to happy running it from socket.

Have you worked out maximum demand for shed and read the supply to OUTBUILDS thread that should help explain things better for you.

Good luck

If thats the case, then make the connections into a 13amp fcu (waterproof it if its outside via an adaptable box), then 2.5mm swa to the shed to supply say a socket.

And then from the socket, 2.5mm into another 3amp fcu, load side out in 1.5mm t&e for a light and switch.

Any good???

Sav

The socket could very well be on a 4 or 6mm radial which would negate the need for SW spurs.

This will only be required if the socket is a spur or part of a socket circuit.

Hi Jason,
I see your point, but what about the lights and switch??

Do you mean maybe terminate the 4mm or 6mm into a mini consumer unit?
Best regards,
Sav

why waterproof via an adaptable box when you can get ip rated fusespurs

how would you terminate the swa into an ip rated fcu ??
how would you terminate the glands on the swa ???

With an adaptable box, you can make of the glands neatly.

Chaps,

IF it turns out the socket on the outside of the house is fed via its own 4 or 6 radial, then all that needs is for the socket to be removed, an IP rated adaptable box fitted and then SWA run underground from there to the shed CU.

If the socket is part of a circuit in 2.5 then it will need an IP rated 13A spur which would then take the SWA from the house to the shed.
