20 years ago I was working as a qualified electrician. I then decided to change direction and worked in IT. I have now retired early and would like to be able to do the odd electrical job. I now see that there is something called a Part P that I require to 'self certify' however, the more I read the more confusing it becomes. Can someone tell me in plain english exactly what I need to do and what additional qualifications I need to take to be able to self certify any small jobs I might undertake? I have C&G Parts 1&2

Thanks all.

Hi Bill
Not sure what Quals you have ? but as a minimum you will need 17th edition and then if you want to regester to b Part P you may need addtional quals. I'm with NAPIT (£406 per year memdership) who require C&G2391 at present. however not all work comes under Part P

Thanks for the reply - I have C&G 236 parts 1&2. Is the 17th edition a qualification I would need to attain? I last worked with the 15th edition and I thought maybe just buyng the 17th edition and noting the difference would be enough?

I wouldn't be returning to electrical contracting full time, so is there an easier route to enable me to carry out small domestic works?

Thanks for your help with this matter

Its funny the majority of the work I used to do was commercial/industrial which I believe needs far more skills/experience. However, many people I know would like the odd 'simple' domestic job done.

download the part p of the building regs. it tells you what is and is not notifiable. basically, notifiable work includes new circuits, any work in a special location ( bathrooms, outside ) , kitchens, new CU. adding extra points to existing circuits, and maintenance work, or like for like replacement of accessories, is not notifiable unless as before . and the 2382, (17th) is IMO, essential.

I was in a similar situation to you full apprentiship had my 16th and returned after 12 year gap I would suggest having a chat with John or Steve at Electrical Training - Home they are fantasic trainers. I dont know anyone who has their knowledge of the 17th edition. Never seen anyone recite it word for word like them from memory - incredible it realy inspires confidence in them. Did a course recenly at a college and the skills level of the instructors were not as good. Wish you every success for the future.
