Is the connections the same on a relay as it is on a contactor, with the a1 for switched live to switch the coil on, and a2 for the neutral coil.?

You need to check the wiring diagram for the specific contactor or relay, but basically the same in theory. Except contactors generally deal with greater loads

Yea, that's what I thought like, are some of the connections for the supply and load side of the relay/contactor, normally open or normally closed is that right?

N/O and N/C are irrelevant to the coil conections.. they will just swop over when you apply voltage to a1 and a2. the contacts and coil conections are seprate

Yes some are NO and some NC...supply in which is switched between NO and NC depending on if the coil is energized or not...

Have a look on the side of the relay for what terminals are...

If the contactor or relay has a1 and a2 marked terminals I've never seen them for anything but coil power...admittedly we use only half a dozen manufacturers. I didn't mean that a1 and a2 are always used for coil power on every device, just that if there is a1 and a2 it wou't be used for anything else.
