Hello,

Just after a bit of advice. A customer has asked if I would be able to put what they have described as a phone point from the hall into the lounge. They have sky tv in the lounge and want the new phone point to connect sky box so they can pay for movies etc..

So basically can I run a spur from the working telephone point in hall to the lounge?

Would this be as simple as spurring from a master? Never touch phone points, but would be happy to do this as they have been good customers. What cable would I need? If its something you think I should stay away from then I'll take no offence!

3 pair phone cable (or you could use 6core alarm cable if you strip the ends before punching down). connect just 2 and 5 . make sure the new socket is a slave (no capacitor)

so change the existing socket for a screw terminal type, and then use the removed socket for the new one.

cat5 is ideal for phones. and i can't see it being a problem for IT as all ethernet connections use it.

Yep connections 2.3.5 as follows blue/white=2 orange/white=3 white/blue=5 maximum 2 wires per terminal on idc connectors and stranded cable (alarm cable)must not be used above spec from BT training manual.will post extracts from it when I get a minute.

DO NOT use alarm cable for telephone connections (Unless they are screw terminals, which is extremely unlikely). The connection will be extremely poor and cause you more hassle than it is worth.

Use 2 or 3 pair phone cable, or Cat 5(e) 6 cable.

I dont profess to know a great deal about phones, but was always shown to connect 2 , 3 , 5
Blue/orange/white &blue

Terminal 3 is no longer needed.

This was used with the old turn dial phones to prevent ringing on other phones whilst dialing. As most (if not all) modern phones are digital you will not need this conection. Your incoming line will only have two conductors, and all accessories will only connect to those two conductors (2 & 5).
