To get a card ranked higher than Electrician you will need the equivilent to 2391, older sparks can gain accredition from directors signatures and references, modern sparks from 1990 ish onwards need a testing qualification to gain approved or higher status.

Nah there's nowt to it once in a rhythm. Certs become second nature, notification is a 5 minute job online. All that's left is a bit of invoicing and account keeping.
I can't imagine working for someone else full time now, and I don't think I would ever want to. But it is a good job I didn't mind not really having any wages to speak of for the first couple of years.

Just to go on myself and to test . Not too fussed what tge card says
To test an installation you have installed you need to be competant, to actually put it through building control you need to either be a member of a scheme or you need to either pay the council yourself or get your customer to pay the council to part p the work.

Unfortunately paper work is a daily headache from the SE. Quotes, Certs, invoices. Labc notification. Suppliers bills. Invoice deputes with customers and suppliers. Insurance. Scheme requirements...... I could go on!

If you follow the links I posted earlier it shows you what qualifications are required if you joined the NICEIC. For instance if you went for domestic installer status as long as you have your Nvq 3 if you want to go approved contractor then you probably will need to gain the 2394/5 qualification or the EAL equivalent as well. Different CPS schemes requirements will naturally be different as they are separate Businesses.

ok thanks everyone a lot to think about
knew a should have been a plasterer
or maybe stick to telecoms .
no schemes needed very low chance of injury.
everythings surface mounted no building control
decent money. Easy job

Hey Chopper, just going sole trader myself after 23 years in the trade, A/C, refrigeration, fibre, comms etc and NICEIC were in contact yesterday. I am looking at best part of a grand for approved contractor status and do not need 2394/2395 yet as they will cert me as "competent person" status upon assessment on 2-3 sites one being my home as I just moved my CU ! They will deal with building controls otherwise in Jersey I will pay £200-£300 per notice I am told ! not a chance !

I will eventually do my 2394/5 but last time on 2391 I was real ill for the written after doing whole course and was unable to just re-sit exam ! Grrrr. Anyways get IET book before testing course on exam success 2394/2395 it's very handy and or use Electa course website, found them handy for training. All the best buddy.
