Ok so we all know we should do good connections, tight so they don’t creep out of create loss connections.


I know that there is a specified newton tightness but looking in the BGB I can’t see the value and i looking in the wrong place.


reg 526.1 “every connection between conductor or between a conductor and other equipment shall provide durable electrical continuity and adequate mechanical strength and protection.”


Thats all great but how tight should it be?


Can anyone point me at the right reg/value.

All connections should be tightened to the torque stated in the manufactures instructions, there isn't a one value suits all for what a connection should be tightened to.


So it is, just looked in the the box of a waterproof CU i have in the cupboard and sure enough in the first flap "installation" its as terminal bar 1-1.5 Nm and RCD/MCB 2-2.5Nm

well they weren't going to exactly list every make and model of consumer unit along with the required torque setting in the BGB/BYB were they lol
 
I've never used a torque screwdriver, and I've never envisaged having to use one in a domestic situation.
I always thought it was something you just get a feel for, like knowing how much pressure to apply on a cable to strip the insulation off but not cut right through it.
 
...And what do you do when it's torqued up to the recommended setting,and it is not enough?

Leave it loose,or wonder why you bought one...:conehead:

Torque screwdrivers have their place,but not in the normal sparks remit...

I haven't got a device to measure how full my bladder is,either....i just seem to know :joker:
 
Use the correct size driver and get tight without screwing the bollox off it, then give the wires a wiggle and check tightness again.
In industrial environments there's usually a planned maintenance system in place to check connections are tight at set periods. lose connections can also be found when conducting a thermographic inspection.

I have, or should I say the nurse who empties it has.
