Hi,

My name is KevBaldry and I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if this has been asked before.

As a qualified electrician, if I change a ballast in a luminaire am I required to fill in a minor works certificate. Is this situation any different to swapping the luminaire?

Welcomer Kev. As far as I know, changing ballast is treated exactly the same as replacing the luminaire.;)

does that also mean if you change a tube or starter you will need to fill a cert in as well?

The reason i ask about the starter as without it the lamp would not work either same as what if you replaced the lamp holder would you issue a cert for that.

Never ending circle of paper work if you did.

?? Changing a luminaire doesn't require minor works.

Now come on you sparks Its not as if we have much paperwork compared to say a plasterer
Just think we could have a certificate for changing lamps
This would be covered by a three day ( £600) course to have a 17th edition lamp changing competency certificate ( which has to be updated every year with a small fee payable)
Non registered sparks and diy ers could pay a fee to the government lamp changing department to bypasas the requirements
Lamp inspectors (employed at great expense because they are essential for the success of the initiative) could fine householders who they can prove changed lamps illegally
It needn't end there defined scope lamp changers could be permitted to change lamps only with restrictions on fluorescents perhaps
This is a refreshing new idea Its a wonder it hasn't been implemented for the whole of the domestic electrical sector
