Hi, i am new to this forum - after many a weeks reading i decided to join in!

I have been thinking of working for myself, and am after general opinions on it really.

Currently employed with all the usual redundancies flying around - we are mainly industrial sector.

If the redundancies were to come around, i think i would fancy going it alone - perhaps go onto the agency's for a short time, and try to pick work up weekends / evening's. Obviously everyone wants to know 'is it worth it?' but im just after any advice - i think i would like to be my own boss, i'm not shy of working hard or long hours, and understand the need to advertise and take anything you can to get yourself going. I'm not going to get carried away about it all, i am concerned that i am still young to the trade and learning, will i be ok?

Any views much appreciated.

.............will i be ok?..........

You haven't given any info about your qualifications, experiance or professional achievements so it's a difficult question to answer. The one thing I would say is that I've seen some very capable tradesmen fail miserably at becoming self employed and it's invariably down to lack of business savvy. Maybe look at going on a small business/marketing type course at one of your local colleges before taking the plunge.

Murdoch; thanks just found some more threads to be read!

It would be good if i could work with a small outfit / one man band to see whats involved with it all aswell i guess, unfortunately chances of that in the current climate are next to zero!!

If you are going to try that just don't expect people on your doorstep to help you. Sooner or later you will be a competitor!
