A customer has recently moved into hes new home and has a large shed fed with 2.5mm swa on a 80m run! Swa is protected by 20 amp mcb but the load at the shed end includes two 2kw heaters plus lights and sockets that he has been using and would like to continue to use. Volt drop calcs say he needs 10mm but typically does not want the expense and wants to know what effect the volt drop will have on appliances/tools he intends to use on sockets as it is. Guessing they will all run ok until the mcb trips?

The lights might be getting a bit dim, especially when he has those two heaters going and using power hungry tools or other appliances!! lol!!

80 Metres on a 2.5 SWA has to be a DIY job pure and simple!! Do a sheath test, i betcha you'll find the sheaths been damaged too during installation or by settlement of stones breeching the PVC sheath... lol!!

well if he`s too tight to get a decent supply to this shed....but he`s loose changed enough to run heaters and god knows what elso of ov it as is.....walk away..let it go...then watch his appliances go too..lol...

Bet the kettle takes a while. As Glenn said, walk away.

Would be an interesting one to calculate the volt drop. The load will drop with the voltage. Anyone any good at quadratic equasions? It's the only way to work two variables. Last time I did them was 36 years ago.

Agree about leaving this one for someone else to deal with. With that volt drop is it a suprise that any appliances work at all? At what point do motors and elements stop working?

Just tell him his installation sucks and ask him why bother asking a spark about it if he won't listen to the answer/advice given. Typical bloody tight-arsed customers......"It works so what's the problem". Tsk.....had one of these the other day with downright dangerous downlight installation......clearly a fire hazard but because it had worked for a year then they wouldn't even let me touch it. And they had three kids under 5. These people need a good slap or at least a shake. Sorry, rant over :drool5:
