I have 2 outdoor floodlights & and pond pump. Each came fitted with H05RN-F cable.

I've looked at 4 cable suppliers' web sites. 2 of these say "suitable for temporary outdoor use", 1 says "suitable for permanent outdoor use" & 1 says nothing about indoor/outdoor use.

Does anyone have the specification or standard for HO5RN-F please? What does it say?

I don't have the spec to hand, but from memory...

H = harmonised
05 = OK up to 500V
R = rubber outer sheath.
N = neoprene inner sheath (i.e the insulation directly touching the copper conductor).
-F = flexible cable.

This is the cable that nearly always comes with pond pumps so it must be suitable for immersion in water.

I always use either RR or RN cable for use outdoors (as long as it's unlikely to get damaged, then you use SWA cable). RR means it has a rubber inner sheath as opposed to neoprene (although I think neoprene is a form of rubber).

Personally, I think VV cable (PVC rather than rubber) may be ok outdoors, as long as it is black, but I always use rubber as this is what I was taught.

Thanks for your reply. I think that the right cable for pond pumps is 3183P
