Hi all
as the picture attached you can see the location of the hob and the metal socket to the right, now the gas fitter has gone to commission the gas and has said he can't do it as the socket is within 150mm of the hob
now looking at the picture , i agree that it looks a little close and looking at it more there is loads of room to the right , however the owner is a little concerned that his freshly tiled back splash will need damaging if it needs to move
any comments welcome , i want to do the correct job , however if the gas man is just being a jobs worth and following recommendations rather than regulations then that would be useful info

This one from NHBC.
It’s what we are required to follow on new builds and similar in my area.

Thanks for that .......... don't remember seeing that before ......... shame its not in BS 7671 - as it would clear things up and remove ambiguity...

That said, space permitting I won't put sockets or switches within 300 mm of hobs

i wouldnotfit a socket above the sink drainer anyway. it's a splash hazard and encourages customers to use a kettle on the drainer. (NHBC diagram #2).

I don't suppose that would be in the remit, maybe in an appendix as rough guidance, but even then people would quote it as law.
By putting it as suitable for the location and influences it puts the onus on the designer to think about the possibilities and work appropriately.
Since it's a gas guy complaining, he should justify it and specify a bs7671 reg, gas reg, or information from the instructions of the socket or hob to justify. There should be a technical support line to help if he's needing assistance.
Specifying everything in the regs is a fine balance between taking away flexibility and giving people clear guidance that only needs a ruler to comply.
