hello, it looks like the JIB will be issuing me a new JIB Approved Electrician card within the next few weeks. My question is - My neighbour asked me if I would be able to rewire his house for him. I told him that I would be glad to and we then agreed on a price. I was wondering if it was legally OK for me to do this for him and would I be able to give him the necessary inspection and completion certificates?
Would it be OK to contact the electricity board to remove the main fuse so that I could connect the tails from his new consumer unit? Could I cut the seal and remove the fuse myself if I informed them about it?
I last rewired a house in the UK about 20 years ago and all I did then was do the job, cut the seal, remove the fuse, connect the tails and replace fuse. I then gave the house owner a completion certificate (a generic one I made myself) and an inspection report (generic one). There was no problems then.
Basically, as a JIB Approved Electrician, can I legally rewire a house or a shop or a small warehouse?
Surely I don't need to be a member of the NICEIC or Select or something, for a simple job like this, do I?
Any info on this would be appreciated, I need to find out if I need to pay someone to sign the paperwork?:confused:

The work will need to be notified to the Local Authority Building Control in advance by at leats 48 hours, and the appropriate fee paid.
This is technically the responsibility of your customer, but it might be helpful if you attend with the customer to produce your qualifications.
Might get a reduced fee?
Depending upon what the particular LABC's policy is, you may get a site visit after or during first fix, and perhaps another at or near the end of the work?

If you have the certs and the testers, then it may be viable for you to get your part p on the back of the job for around £400 and build it into the job price.

WTF is the "Part P"? How do I go about getting that? Finally, how much does it cost to get it?
This seems like another money making scam for whoever came up with the idea, I know for sure that somebody, who is not an electrician, wants my money, before I am allowed to carry out work in my trade.

You've got it in one.

As above you can do the work and if this is a one off it will be cheaper for you to notify your local building authority, pay them (about £150+) before the work starts then when your finished someone in a suit comes around and checks your work and certs. Get in touch with your lba and fine out the price and what size hoops you have to jump through.
