chris-

i have been ofered a managers role for a big construction company running 5 sites at any one time, i would do all the testing and signing off. i use my own van, and the sites are everywhere from london to bristol, kent and southampton. i will do the design of installations and ordering all materials. My question is this, HOW MUCH HARD CASH should i ask for? your input please.

Are they going to pay for your petrol? I bet you will get through quite a lot on a month.

Iagree with the £30-40k quoted above. You'll also want a company credit card for all the fuel and accomodation bills

i have just done my probationary period with them starting at 31k, they said we can review pay after the three months, they pay 45p a mile for the first 10,000 and 25p there after but im doing 2,500 miles a month they pay for hotels but no food allowence. i have been doing between 50 and 80 hours per week but mostly 60. i thought go in at £45 and take £40 as i have been offered back to my old company for 40 hours for £37.5k

Just thought I'd drop a note an mention as it might be worth looking into. My lass works in HR an when claiming fuel allowance she mentioned before that can claim the difference between what they pay per mile an the 40p per mile through the tax office. It comes through your tax code. Not sure all the details but if you can claim, then at those sort of miles be a nice number. ;)

If you are doing 2500 miles per month you need a company car or a car allowance. The tax allowance of 45p per mile then 25 p per mile will not cover the depreciation and wear and tear on your car. Do you get life insurance? Pension? Health insurance?

I know, driving a fully loaded high top transit with site box in it, It costs about 30p a mile before tyres, tax, aa cover and insurance. no life, no health, so what is YOUR proposed figure?

is 60 hrs the norm,i take it you will be on salary and you wont get overtime,£30-40k id want more, some sparks will be earning that and you will have more pressure etc,id go for £45-48k,id expect a company car or van for that position too,id go for a company van and opt out if you dont use it for private use, will save some money in tax,as for hotels we get holiday inns with £30 food/drink allowance per night, nice places the holiday inns but id ask for say £90 per night allowance as you may have to entertain clients when your away, you dont have to spend the £90 if your on your own but it will be there if you do invite some clients for a meal etc..and remember dont change just because your a gaffer now...:beatnik2:

When I said 30-40 that was assuming 40 hour week and company car with fuel card.

For 60 hours a week I would be wanting more like 40-45 and a company car and fuel is a must for those kind of miles...

Whatever rate you come up with that you think the job is worth to you add 10% and they will come back with an offer 15-20% less than that. Bigger companies do like a barter and it makes them think they have won. Best check what a fuel card will cover as you may get taxed for % of private milage. I think from memory is assumed at about 20% ish. worth thinking about before agreeing.

To get round the private mileage tax, one company I used to work for had a system where when you submitted your company credit card receipts every month you had to admit to some private mileage and recompense the company for it. The calculation went something like-
A Mileage at end of period-xxxxx
B less opening mileage xxxxx
C Total mileage A-B xxxxx
Private mileage xxxx @ xp per mile = the cheque you had to write.
This method had been agreed with HMIT and was never questioned so as long as you put something sensible down each month (and had records just in case) you never had to worry

ive just replied to the blog, so ill copy here too. id want at least £25 an hour if using own vehicle. Running 5 sites at once is a lot of responsibility and not likley to be without its problems.
