I got a call yesterday asking if I can earth some light fittings he bought from Pakistan. I've never done this before but in theory its straight forward. They are chrome but have no idea what they look like other than having exposed metal parts. What would be the best way of earthing them without it being an eye sore? Are there any suppliers that stock the parts needed for a job like this? Or will I have to fabricate it?

got any pics of these fittings?

have you checked to confirm they are actually class 1s?

That said, I've brought a guitar back from holiday. Mrs Trev dragged me into a shop in Florida because she'd heard guitars there were half the price they are here. She was right too.

If you haven't even seen them, how the hell are we supposed to know what would be the best method?? lol!! What ever you need to do, to earth these probable god awful light fittings, will undoubtedly need to be fabricated...

I'd love to supply a pic but as op says I havnt seen them and if I did I still can't upload pics via the mobile app (can't even view other images via mobile app either)
Cheers Richard they look like they'll do the trick I think.
Thanks everyone else. If they can't be done maybe I'll tell him to use them as marracas? Lol

Sorry guys it won't let me post pic. Basically its a ceiling rose cover with 6 hollow bolts going into the sides with a nut securing it. All the arms of the pakistani chandelier are metal so I rekon only one bolt needs earthing as all arms are connected so will have continuity. Correct if I'm wrong?

Not having the benefit of seeing it, if its from Pakistan its probably crap, so just drill a hole in it and bond it with 10mm nut and bolt and nice shiny 4mm yellow green cable and nice shiny steel lug. Top job, nice and safe.

I once had a similar problem with some eyesore a bloke brought back from Sri Lanka, and he wanted it in his bathroom!.......dream on:yesnod:

I'd probably go with a ring crimp as well; securely attach it to wherever you can, otherwise you might have to make your own hole, then obviously test continuity.

Of course it all depends on the construction of the fitting. On my last job we had these metal light fittings going in the bathrooms. They were metal and didn't have any means of earthing so we were instructed to modify the fitting to include an earth. I pointed out they were ELV so probably shouldn't be earthed, but I was told to stop arguing and get on with it. :rolleyes2:
