My daughter needs to get 240v linked smoke alarms fitted, 2 storey house, as it's fully decorated, my questions are:
Can they be linked to the lighting circuit on each floor
Any advice on what make
Can they be linked together without being hard wired to each other
I will be getting a spark to do it and sign it off as daughter is registering as childminder, but we need to know the options/upheaval
Cheers

You can get units with wireless interlinking but each unit still needs its own independent power supply - this could be from the local lighting circuit on each floor.

Simple answer yes, using radio bases wired from existing light fitting. plenty of makes out there, but Aico are the favorite.

Cheers Dave, she knows she needs them but is moaning about disruption to decor, so knowing the spark can connect like that will keep her happy, as he will be able to easily link them into lights on each level

As Dave says, radio link bases are available, but are quite costly. Each point can then be wired from a local lighting point with minimal damage to surrounding decor.

May I ask why your daughter "needs" to get these fitted ?

Presume HMO, hopefully permanent live at fitting.....most modern house do...but worth checking first with your spark

registered childminder. social services insist on smoke detectors and other safety measures so they can tick boxes and earn their index linked pensions.

i would think so, but some councils will insist on mains interlinked.

Yes local social services issue licence, my wife has been registered for years and we needed linked electrical ones too,

That's different to down here then. Mrs Andy78 is a registered childminder in our home, and battery alarms suffice for our local council requirements, ofsted, and insurance purposes.

Thought I would update as a thank you to all the people who took the time to assist and advise, I've contacted the fire service as they do the fire safety house inspection to get daughter registered, waiting on them replying, once I know I will update
Thanks

Fire service have called back and confirmed the smoke alarms must be electric and linked, and comply with BS 5839 pt 6 LD3 grade 6

Thats a fair request from FS, for a Grade D LD3, so you will need to install a detector in ground floor hallway and any landing areas. Standard house 2 detectors. Hopefully live conductor available in Lighting rose, and 2 Aico radio bases with Optical smoke detectors.....
