I am currently in the process of becoming self employed, i have contacted the NICEIC and will be joining there approved contractor scheme, however until i have achieved approved contractor status how do i notify domestic work to building control? You need a minimum of 5 jobs available for the NIC to inspect, Im unsure how you can advertise to carry out domestic work if you are not able to sign them of for building control? Any advise would be much appreciated thanks!

Go to the building control dept for the area of work, tell them what you want to do, they'll give you a form to fill in and you will have to pay some money as well, in my area its about £150! Its up to them to then get worked checked (if they can be ---'d) and as you are using this for your assessment you'll have to do paperwork and I suggest you send building control a copy when finished.

thanks yellowvanman, is that £150 for each job!? in my current employment i am responsible for part p notification and certification of all our jobs and its £1.50 per job. £150 seems a little on the steep side? would it be possible to back date the notification, say complete the part p when i have become part of the mic scheme??

Yes from my experience £150 per job. Thats why its 'better' to join a scam and pay only £1.50. The £150 in theory should be used by Building Control to hire another electrician to do a EICR on your work, I believe in my area thats not done because what an sparjky would charge could be >£150.

Otherwise if you can time the jobs and assessment correctly you could notify once you get your approval, but it needs to be done within 30 days of doing the job!

thanks for you help yellowvanman, seems like a bit catch 22, you need to have jobs completed to become part of the niceic schemes but you need to be part of the niceic scheme to complete the jobs?

then consider elecsa before niceic. youonly need 1 major job for assessment . you can do the job , pass your assessment, then notify through elecsa for £1,50. no need to pay labc their extortion. round here labc charge £300 , so if you're diong a CU change, you got to charge £600+ so you won;t get the job,

Think yourself lucky you are not in Surrey/Berks where a CU change notification is over £200!

£300 in cheshire, murdoch.

it's because us northerners have always had to subsidise the southern half of the country, especially the lazy sods in london who earn twice the money for half the work.
