Hello, i've rewired my own house. I'm fully qualified but not Part P. I've done it properly to the letter and have tested it. To the letter...

I'm gonna get my Part P mate to sign it off.

What do i need to do about building control? It's ok to say that i did the work and that a Part P electrician came and tested it and signed it off, isn't it?

If not, then what should i have legally done? Payed someone 3 grand to do the work that i could have easily done myself?

What happens when i sell the house if i don't say anything to BC, but still get my mate to sign it off?

Surely i'm allowed to do what i want with my own electrics in my own house?

As it goes, i've made it a thousand times safer by geting rid of the horrors that i found (socket radial wired off of the boiler thermostat, bare twisted together joints, cables ran with heating pipes inside the lagging, no earth in the lighting, no gas/water bonding, etc, etc.)

Do i just need to tell BC that it's been rewired and tested by a Part P electrician? I don't really know much about this as i've been working on industrial plant for the last 6 years...

Cheers.

It's up to you, keep your mouth shut is one option.
Pay building control is another
or use this job to join nic, napit etc

You will find it hard to get someone to sign it off for you
i know my choice

If your mate is going to sign it off, problem solved! End of any problems

But no, you are not allowed to do whatever in your own house, someone who has done a 5 week course is probably entitled o do more than you. (but not a full rewire)
Yes we all know it's a silly system

Ok, so i just get him to sign it off and to notify BC?

Do they send someone round to check it?

I'm really just asking out of interest for the legalities of rewiring my own house- Surely i can do what i want with it?

Thanks.

You can't do what you like with your own house no, building control and building regulations cover everything inside the house pretty much. I can't imagine what would happen if people could do what they liked with their own houses, floors made out of chocolate maybe?

Yes if he signs it off, he will notify BC also.
i have never known them check up, anyway if they do check what is there to see, they can't see who is doing the work can they?
You don't have anything to hide if they do check do you?
Legally you have to be a member of a professional body to do most electrical work in your own house (or pay BC)

I would have thought there would be ramifications when you sell it with a load of moody work carried out, but still would have thought you can alter the wiring if you want to. Does this mean that it's illegal for me to change a light fitting without getting it signed off?

No, nothing to hide- It's all good, down to brown sleeving on switch lines and linked 230v smoke and heat detectors.

When you say 'Pay BC', do you mean that they send someone out to test it?

Thanks.

Yes you can change light fittings, sockets, etc. but you can't add circuits, work in special locations ie bathrooms and kitchens, replace a db, etc
Can't comment on if BC send sum1 out I don't know as I've never went up that route. I presume they would for the money they are getting

if your mate is a member of a scam ( niceic, elecsa, napit) , and if he's willing to accept responsibility for the rewire , i.e. say that he's done the whole job, then that's up to him.

so an MP rents out a house, pulling in oodles of cash, then claims the same amount in expenses, saying he is paying rent. sounds about right for your average snout in trough MP.

Then the next thing your mate knows is when HMRC come knocking on his door wanting their share of what he charged for the rewire that he notified.

Best just do it & say nowt. There's far too much control & persecution of the honest working man in this godforsaken country nowadays.

So much for the tax man and all those doing things legit.
Sod the tax man.

I recently cashed a small private pension that was worth in round figures £7k

By the time the tax man had finished, I was left with in round figures £5k

Do what the Right Honourable Members of Parliament do ... fiddle, fiddle fiddle & fiddle some more.

Test it yourself for peace of mind, then crack a can open and forget all about it. You are a qualified electrician, that is enough.

Forget all the BS so called 'requirements'. Don't even bother to get your 'mate' to put his name to it. No one will ever check. You know it's safe if you have installed and tested it as a qualified electrician. Trust in your own work and move on.
