best use for a capacitor is to charge it to 300volts and place in apprentice's toolbox

I fail to see the point as domestic consumers in the UK are charged by KW/h so there would be no savings with a better power factor.
a use i have found for the humble capacitor is if using a PIR to energise a relay or contactor. PIRs don't like inductive loads, so a cap. across the coil will fool the PIR into thinking it's resistive.
Ironic that I just read your comments
My local club just bought themselves a Pir and a contactor off the recomendation of their supplier for quartz lamps
they asked me to fit them
The contactor would drop out from the pir but instantly come back in again from the induction from the coil dropping out, with the result, it came on, tried to click off, and then stayed on permenantly
I resolved the problem by taking a capacitior out of an old central heating pump
So what you have said will be a good piece of advise for sparks who haven't come accross the problem
