Does that boiler really have the main supply terminals that close to the edge of the enclosure?! What a terrible design.

Given the mahoosive amount of empty space inside it makes absolutely no sense but yes they are.

TBH with all the things wrong with the install of the boiler and all the issues with the existing install I didn't even notice that.

Nice garage DB found on an EICR today, supplying lights, sockets and a heater. No RCD protection, armour not glanded correctly, no earth fly lead at either end; and just look at the choice of OCPD.

I don’t know, but I did say to the client that at least the installer (previous owner) stopped short of utilising the B63 for the lights…

My sarcasm may have been wasted on him.

He’s lived there 10 years and said nothings ever tripped in the garage, so it must be good.

Looks like a more modern metal consumer unit...Are you sure it wasn't the current owner that was maybe the installer
Those MCB's don't look like they would be what was intended for that consumer unit? At least, I've never come across a contactum unit that they would have been made for, it's always been the plastic variety

You’re right about those MCB’s too, I’ve got loads and they’re all from old plastic boards that I’ve ripped out recently.

I have a box load of solid copper links, never had one trip wherever i have installed them!!

What’s even worse is the owner has been going full pelt with the solar since it was installed.

There is no way this has been done by a qualified person. Not a chance in hell.

Back to a pub kitchen I worked in a month or so back. His fryers have overheated the sockets.

It’s a duel fryer… 2 x 3kW I recall, and I told him to plug them into different double sockets.
All good.

This is what met me this morning….

13A fuse is welded into the plug, and has melted the front of the socket. Backside of socket has no signs of heat damage.

Replaced the socket and plug, but it’s likely to happen again.

13A plug should be fine for the fryer but it must be the duration that it’s on for during a weekend shift…
Or could it be down to hot oil splashing the socket?
It’s not dripping in grease here, but there is some residue.

The other half of the fryer doesn’t show overheating to this extent.

I’ll quote for installing 2 x 16A radials for the fryers, and do away with the 13A weak spot being the fuse… but no spare ways… gonna be a new board.

In theory the fryers should be fine on a 13amp plug top as supplied by the manufacture

The fact the plug top is melting could be sign of a cheapo fake plug top ?

The plug top is moulded on, so it came with the fryer.
It might be that the fuse holder itself was loose.

The socket was a volex… now it’s a BG, cos that’s all I had in the van.

There will always be problems with a 3kw heating/ cooking load fed via a 13amp plug and socket. It's just the constant load causing heat.
Used to get a lot of it with 3 bar electric fires and these days 3kw fan heaters.
This MK one hidden behind a sofa....he thought there was a funny smell when he had his heater belting it out.

Posted before showing the internals of a twin socket melted due to overload, nothing tripped out as above, I wonder if an AFDD would have tripped and saved the damage to the socket? and more importantly stopped the room smelling of fish.
