Hello all I'm looking to become a sparky after 14 years of being in the Army. I do have some basic knowledge from when I was an engineer before the army and when I have mated for my old man when on leave. I know I have a long way to go before I can call myself a sparky years not weeks but here is what I plan to do.

I am going to start on one of the 6 week courses to get the following qualifications. ( I can hear the teeth sucking from here :D )

2382-12 17th edition
2392-10 Inspection and testing
2377 PAT testing.

For This I will use the first of the ELCS to pay for it

After this I will pritty much work for free as an electricians mate. This is to start gaining experience and work towards getting a 2330 leval 2/3 at collage (or equivalant ) The level 2 I will pay for then the level 3 I can then use my ELCS againe. So I see this as a bit win win as I get to gain from the experiences and knowledge from the sparky. he gets the free laboure and dose not have to sponsor my education costs.

Luckaly the severance the army is paying me well and I will probably not need a paying job for about 2 years ( that and the wife is a nurse )

But my main question is this a good way to brake into this trade?

Ah may have to re think this

there is nothing wrong with your proposal, as long as your prepared for a long hard slog, maybe 3 years or more, and even offering your services for free, you might find that you struggle to get experience, its really really tough out there at the moment!.

All the best of luck!!

A hard slog is no problem and I am prepared to do a fair bit for free as I would need the experience.

Well after being an AT/EOD it is lol that and I needed something less stressfully to do
Seen as you were an AT then I will not speak to you. You should have chosen a decent trade such as VS!!!

Good luck mate, it's hard out here at the minute, even agency work is drying up.

Thanks for the welcome all I can see me hanging about a fair bit the amount of info I have found on here is awesome. And has given me the steer in the right direction.
