Hi, I have a new light for the bathroom after the other stopped working but these are the wires I'm confronted with. I have tried to wire with the black as live no joy and then the brown as live no joy I'm so confused. when wired up the light fixing is showing live on the tester yet no light please help me. any advice would be greatly appreciated

That isn't something for a novice to approach so I would strongly recommend that you find an electrician.
All those wires and connections require correct enclosure.
 
How was the old light connected?

This appears to be a loop in/out system. Where there will be permanent lives, a switched live, neutral conductors and CPC conductors.

But looking at the condition of the cables from your picture, I would leave it to the professionals.!

I wouldn't advise you to tackle this job, get a qualified spark to do it, they have the correct testing equipment and will easily discern which conductors are which.
