really simple one how many sockets can I run off a 13amp fused spur, I know I could look it up in the book, but I'm trying to win an argument in a pub?

There is no restriction on the number of sockets that can be supplied from a fused spur as the cable cannot be overloaded, however on a practical basis the use of the sockets would need to be limited to a total of 13A total to avoid the fuse blowing all the time so consideration of expected load would be useful.

Wonder how the conclusion to that argument went - he may be still passed out from his winnings!

Or drowning his sorrows after loosing.

Agree with what Richard says, check out Appendix 15 of BS 7671, for a pictorial description.
